Iva Maghuyop

Elementary Educator, Literacy Coach, and Reading Specialist

Iva has been an elementary educator since 2000, and is excited to use her background in the arts along with her literacy expertise to support the work of the Dance Education Laboratory. Iva earned her MSEd in Teaching Literacy from Bank Street College of Education, and holds New York State certification in Elementary Education (grades 1-6) and Literacy (birth-grade 6). She earned her BA in Theatre from Davidson College, a liberal arts college in Davidson, North Carolina. In 2003, Iva was a founding teacher at an arts-based K-5 charter school in the Bronx, where she later became the school’s first literacy coach. She went on to become part of the founding team at another K-5 charter school, this time as the school’s instructional literacy coach. She has also worked for the New York City Department of Education as a classroom teacher and K-2 literacy coach through the NYC Public Schools Literacy Collaborative. Iva has taught in a variety of settings in the Bronx and Manhattan, including general education, integrated co-teaching, gifted and talented, and Multilingual Learner populations. Currently, Iva works as a reading specialist in Westchester County, New York, where she lives with her husband, two dancing daughters, and their cat.
