DEL Dance for Elementary Aged Learners (Ages 6-11)

Module 1 provides an overview of Dance with Students ages 6-11, looking at how we set ourselves and our students up for success. In Module 1 Part 1, we examine considerations for creating a safe and inviting learning environment for all students, followed by suggestions for implementation and practice. In Module 1 Part 2, we take a deep dive into lesson planning preparation with an emphasis on how we can engage students in the learning process and provide opportunities for student empowerment.

In Module 2 Part 1, we will explore how literary resources can serve as inspiration for lower elementary dance warm-ups that engage the body and mind. We will also analyze poetry and how it can be utilized to develop an upper elementary co-created warm-up. In Part 2 we will review the DEL Dance Framework and its application for identifying and describing movement vocabulary.

In Module 2 Part 2, we will examine possible entry points through dance. We will use the DEL Dance Framework as a means for analyzing and identifying movement vocabulary found in a text.

In Module 3, we are going to explore dance lesson plans that incorporate mathematical concepts. Part 1 will examine lower elementary alignment of dance content as we embody shapes to develop a movement sentence. Part 2 will examine an upper elementary lesson plan that uses chance and probability to expand upon a movement sentence to create variations

In Module 4, we will explore dance lesson plans that draw inspiration from science. In Part 1, we will investigate a lower elementary lesson plan that continues to look at the development and culmination of student choreography using the DEL Dance Framework focused on the use of imagery. In Part 2, we will explore an upper elementary lesson plan that emphasizes embodied learning through the use of improvisation and reflection. 

In Module 5, we will explore movement inspiration through a social studies lens, offering multiple entry points to integrate dance with various aspects of history, geography, civics, and government. Please familiarize yourselves with local or state standards to ensure developmentally appropriate movement activities.

In Part 1, we will engage in a dance lesson centered on students’ communities and notable landmarks, emphasizing the importance of reflection. This section encourages students to explore their surroundings through movement, using dance to represent identity, history, and cultural significance.

In Part 2, we will investigate the importance of a cool-down at the conclusion of a lesson as a closing ritual.

In Module 6, we will explore how when creating choreographic tasks, connecting to students’ lived experiences can serve as a powerful source of inspiration. Incorporating texts, masterworks, and overarching themes can further enhance their understanding and creative process. In Module 6, we will explore lessons designed around student interests and current trends, ensuring that dance-making remains relevant and engaging.
