My good friend Tina Curran had just touched down in NYC from Texas when I called her today to talk about the DEL course, Dancing with the Ballet Master: Mr. Balanchine and the Blueprint. I could hear the excitement in her voice as she spoke about the class. She expressed that what most excites her about teaching this course is “the opportunity to teach with Heather Watts and Deborah Wingert and of course, to experience George Balanchine and his dances through their eyes.”
The experience of Balanchine that will shine through in this course goes far beyond what you would get from purchasing a ticket to one of his ballets: Heather Watts is a Balanchine ballerina!
Heather and Tina plan to highlight how Balanchine stretched the boundaries and built on the traditions of classical ballet. He extended the ballet vocabulary and made it uniquely his own by being attentive to the world around him and being influenced by: jazz, Broadway, Hollywood, and vernacular dance. Tina told me that she has been watching The Four Temperaments in anticipation of this course and feels: “… blown away by the contemporary movement in the piece. Contemporary ballet companies are doing the same kind of movement today that Balanchine was doing in 1946.”
Heather and Tina hope that students will take away a magical, joyful, and embodied experience of Balanchine and his artistry as well as means to transfer their experience to their own students with the dance legacy framework. If this sounds like an experience you want to have, it’s not too late to sign up for the course, but it is this weekend, so hurry! Email kwilk[email protected] to register.
