Delving into the cultural and historic roots of Salsa dance, DEL’s Salsa Stories II, a Salsa Dance online course, will make space for new, untold, or unfolding stories through Salsa dance.

Participants will explore Salsa Stories through many voices in our community, continuing to explore the diverse roots and branches of Salsa, including the impact of Salsa on the concert stage. Guest artists will explore different perspectives of the global salsa phenomena as we continue to weave our very own salsa stories. Participants will leave with a variety of salsa-inspired activities to bring into their teaching environments.

In this workshop, we will continue to unearth common misconceptions and stereotypes related to the dance form, examine how personal, communal, and societal struggles are presented and resisted through Salsa, and deepen understandings of how diverse communities connect to Salsa through the clave (the pulse), relationships, and storytelling.

Registration closes 9/23.

DEL’s Contemplating War & Peace: Perspectives from The Green Table workshop introduces dance educators to Kurt Jooss’ The Green Table, seminal anti-war dance, as danced by the renowned Paul Taylor Dance Company, and presents an original 6-12th grade DEL curriculum that uses the piece as an entry point to develop students’ critical thinking skills and empathy in a culturally responsive environment. The curriculum examines the different experiences of war as illustrated in The Green Table using movement exploration and analysis, group discussion, textual analysis and research, as well as collaborative dance making. With the artistic excellence and the dynamism of Paul Taylor Dance Company, participants will deepen their understanding of the historic and current relevance of this iconic work and contemplate the existential questions of war and peace through the vehicle of dance.

Registration closes 10/12.

The DEL Foundations course provides an overview of the key components of the nationally acclaimed DEL model of teaching dance.

This 12-week asynchronous course is based on the highly popular DEL Foundations course that has been taught since DEL’s inception in 1995. Developed by DEL Founder, Jody Gottfried Arnhold with Ann Biddle, the course has evolved over its long history. This current iteration, updated by Ann Biddle, Catherine Gallant and Megan Minturn, reflects current 21st-century dance education practice and pedagogy.

Participants in this course explore DEL’s comprehensive and inclusive model of dance education with a specific focus on applied Laban Movement Analysis (LMA), dance making, and lesson planning. Participants interact in the online community by engaging in collaborative dance making, practice teaching, self and peer reflection, and consider applications of the DEL Model to one’s unique teaching context. In addition, participants gain an understanding of broad developmental benchmarks and effective and inspired teaching strategies to support diverse learners that align with local, state and/or national dance standards.

NOTE: This program takes place asynchronously via DEL’s LearnDash. The dates and times listed below are when the course opens and closes. If you are not taking the course for credit (SUNY ESC or DEL Certificate), you may complete the course at your own pace within this time frame. If you are taking the course for credit (SUNY ESC or DEL Certificate), you will be expected to complete each module during the week it is assigned.

Registration closes 11/2.
